National Tsing Hua University’s plan to establish a post-baccalaureate program in medicine was approved at a recent inter-ministerial meeting held at the Ministry of Education. The school’s recruitment and application process will begin by the end of 2021, and the first batch of government-sponsored students will be listed in September 2022.

NTHU President Hocheng Hong said NTHU already has a solid foundation in interdisciplinary research in medical sciences, including big data analysis, application of artificial intelligence (AI), bio- engineering, materials science and nuclear medicine, thanks to which the school is well- able to train doctors specializing in more than one expertise. As such, this new program represents a quantum leap in medical education in Taiwan.

President Hocheng said the NTHU already has sufficient faculty, funds and infrastructure for the new program. In addition to the existing 180 faculty members who teach related courses, the program recently recruited 71 other full-time faculty members and 87 medical scientists from major medical centers in Taiwan as adjunct faculty members. In addition, the provisional office of this program has raised NT $ 2 billion for medical education. An ongoing plan for the establishment of a university hospital and a state-of-the-art medical complex in Taoyuan Airfield, adjacent to Taoyuan International Airport, is currently under consideration by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. to be.

The post-baccalaureate program in medicine is a four-year program, open to graduates of all disciplines. Government-sponsored students will be required to serve in a public health facility for six years. They will have the opportunity to undertake an additional two years of advanced training in a medical center.

NTHU will draw on its vast experience in recruiting students to admit only those applicants who meet the strict admission requirements, the innovative student selection process could open a new path for medical education in Taiwan.

The post-baccalaureate program in medicine will be part of the future College of Life Sciences and Medicine (currently the College of Life Sciences).
